The supercalifragilisticexpialidocious moon

You could hard miss the hype about the extra large appearance of the moon tonight. Nick Grimshaw on Radio 1 even mentioned it this morning!  We’ve been spoilt this year, because this situation has happen three times. In fact last month’s full moon was a supermoon too.

However, tonight’s coincidence of full moon and close approach to the Earth means that the moon will appear brighter and bigger in the sky than it has since 1948 and it won’t happen again for another 18 years. The Earthsky website has a nice image showing the kind of difference in moon face-size that should be visible … if the weather holds.

And that is the rub, because cloud was predicted. So when I checked at 5:30pm and couldn’t see anything it wasn’t a surprise. However, roughly an hour later there were glimpses of brightness in the East.

I sat down to wait and sure enough began to see more …

until finally the whole face was revealed, albeit behind a layer of high nebulous cloud (so sadly it isn’t as detailed as the nearly full moon that I photographed three days ago).
