Wordless Wednesday – Never underestimate the value of a saucer of water to wildlife

Unidentified speckled bird

Who is this speckled cutie? I asked the RSPB*, via twitter, for help identifying the bird and was told that it is a Spotted Flycatcher, Muscicapa striata

We’ve never seen one in the garden before, so that’s a new species to add to our list of 2020 visitors.

In fact, as far as I can make out we were quite lucky to see this bright-eyed beauty as late as this in the year. Typically they leave the UK for wintering grounds in Africa during August, although apparently passage migrants can be seen in September. Hurray!

Refreshed and ready for the off. Hope to see him next year!

Isn’t it fun to make a new friend? It’s so cute — and no doubt grateful for the drink you provided.
