On Monday I noticed that the village horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) trees are coming into leaf

Their brown bud scales are giving way to fresh green growth.

A week ago there was hardly any green showing. They were all shine: Sticky, resin-coated, leathery scales!

Now you can see the woolly, concertinaed folds of their pinnate leaves unfurling

Soon the canopy will block out the sky … obscuring the moon!!
Oh, so nice! It is exciting to see leaves unfurling. I miss the sound of the wind moving the leaves during dormancy, it’s a lovely accompaniment to our garden work. 🙂
Yes, there are lots of distinct, but soothing sounds to wind through leaves. Whereas bare branches clattering against each other sound much more violent.
…and cold! 😉
I’m laughing — I read your title as “Sticky buns.” Now I want a sugar, cinnamon, and pecan confection! Maybe I should substitute horse chestnuts for the pecans!
I was a bit worried there for a second! I remember my son making soap from pulverised conkers one autumn, but I’d steer clear of them for confectionery.
Well-observed 👍
