Your crabapples don’t look at all like the crabapples I remember from childhood. Our tree always was loaded, but the apples didn’t cluster, and they were somewhat larger. They were sour as could be, too. I don’t remember Mom ever cooking with them.
On the other hand, at holiday dinners we always had ‘spiced apples’ on the table. They were red, probably because of the spiced syrup they were soaked in. They came in jars, either whole or as rings. I just went looking, and couldn’t find anything like them online. Perhaps they’re one of those foods that fell out of favor, and now no one produces them. In any event, now I’m wondering if your crabapples were the basis for our spiced apples.
